Brand Controversy(ies): ColourPop and music artist Becky G released their second collab collection called "Hola Chola." Another brand by the same name claimed that the artist stole its intellectual property. Hola Chola Inc., founded by Susana Gonzalez, sells clothing and accessories that commemorate the same 1990’s Mexican-American Chola culture that Becky G’s collection tributes. Complete with La Virgencita denim jackets and “Hola Chola” jewelry and accessories, Gonzalez even once met with Becky G’s team to discuss a collaboration. When Hola Chola Inc.’s followers saw Becky G’s collection, they called out Becky G for ripping Gonzalez off. The LA-based indie company began calling on fans to spread the word to their friends not to support Becky G’s collection. The collection was immediately removed pending legal action against Becky G and ColourPop.
In 2016, three deeper shades of the line’s Sculpting Stix are called “Yikes,” “Dume” and “Typo.” While the contouring products were released in June of that year, many consumers noticed — and addressed — the names in social media posts this week after an eagle-eyed tweeter noticed it. ColourPop has apologized and changed the names of the products in question. It hasn't happened again as far as I'm aware of.
ColourPop has been criticized heavily for how they have handled certain releases for highly coveted collections, such as the Sailor Moon Collaboration (which I covered extensively in my Facebook Live Video). Many fans have asked ColourPop to set the collection as a pre-order and to have a purchasing limit as Ebay scalpers have been purchasing a lot of the products and reselling them at a much higher markup.
Most Recently, ColourPop has rightfully come under fire for their latest Summer Collection, Sandstone in which the packaging design was culturally misappropriated and stolen from several Indigenous Tribes whom those patterns belong to. ColourPop has apologized and is working on repackaging the collection with a different design.
It's easy for me to say that I have a complicated relationship with ColourPop. On the one hand, their products are affordable and decent quality, but at times, their customer service is problematic at best and unresponsive at worst. When ColourPop announced on their Social Media that they were going to do another Disney Collaboration, I was curious to see what it was going to be. Little did I know, that they decided to collaborate with Star Wars, specifically the Mandolorian. I was actually excited to see which character they were going to choose for this Collab and it turns out that they decided to go with The Child aka Baby Yoda. Excellent choice since he's the breakout star and is so adorable!
As for purchasing the palette, ColourPop finally listened to their customers and instituted a Limit 2 per customer purchase in their system; which they should have done from the start for their Sailor Moon and other Disney Collaborations. As soon as I got the palette, the packaging drew my attention as to how adorable it is! The mirror is also cute and has Baby Yoda in the corner. The palette is monochromatic neutrals with different shades and tones of olive greens, golds and browns. Before we get into more details, here are the colors:
Precious Cargo: Pale, shimmery gold
Right Hand Mando: Pale, shimmery green with silver undertones
Just Like a Tatooine: A matte sand color
Sipping Soup: A shimmery pea soup green
Baby Face: A matte sage green The Force: A shimmery gold, with brown undertones
Little Frog: A semi-matte olive green with silver glitter
Float Your Crib: A dark, matte olive green
Droid Protocol: A matte brown, with red undertones
The finger and brush swatches are the most consistent that I have seen in any ColourPop palette. The only shade that needs more love and work is Baby Face. As far as pigmentation goes, this palette is one of the most pigmented of their eyeshadow palettes. I did three different looks with this palette and it applies smoothly and blends beautifully. It is so pigmented that you only need one swipe of the finger or brush to apply color.
The glitter fallout is minimal and the kickup is minimal. I don't know if ColourPop switched the formula for this palette, and if they did, they need to continue using this formula, it is that good.
It is a little more expensive than the other other Monochromatic palettes that they have released, but since it is licensed by Disney and Star Wars, I expected it to be a little more expensive.
Aside from one shade needing some more work, this palette is excellent for beginners, Star Wars Fans and for people who love neutrals, but also want to play with more greens. This palette is also wonderful for people who have Green, Hazel and Brown eyes and want to make them pop (this palette is wonderful for folks with other eye colors too, but it happens to make the eye colors of those mentioned more noticeable).
This is what a Star Wars themed palette is supposed to look like if they are focusing on a character. It is funny to me that ColourPop nailed it much better than Pat McGrath did with her Rise of Skywalker Palette.
This is one of the best palettes that ColourPop has done and I really hope that they keep this formula for their future releases.
This palette gets 10 Baby Yodas out of 10.
