Brand Controversy(ies): ColourPop and music artist Becky G released their second collab collection called "Hola Chola." Another brand by the same name claimed that the artist stole its intellectual property. Hola Chola Inc., founded by Susana Gonzalez, sells clothing and accessories that commemorate the same 1990’s Mexican-American Chola culture that Becky G’s collection tributes. Complete with La Virgencita denim jackets and “Hola Chola” jewelry and accessories, Gonzalez even once met with Becky G’s team to discuss a collaboration. When Hola Chola Inc.’s followers saw Becky G’s collection, they called out Becky G for ripping Gonzalez off. The LA-based indie company began calling on fans to spread the word to their friends not to support Becky G’s collection. The collection was immediately removed pending legal action against Becky G and ColourPop.
In 2016, three deeper shades of the line’s Sculpting Stix are called “Yikes,” “Dume” and “Typo.” While the contouring products were released in June of that year, many consumers noticed — and addressed — the names in social media posts this week after an eagle-eyed tweeter noticed it. ColourPop has apologized and changed the names of the products in question. It hasn't happened again as far as I'm aware of.
Most recently, ColourPop has been criticized heavily for how they have handled certain releases for highly coveted collections, such as the Sailor Moon Collaboration (which I covered extensively in my Facebook Live Video). Many fans have asked ColourPop to set the collection as a pre-order and to have a pirchasing limiting as Ebay scalpers have been purchasing a lot of the products and reselling them at a much higher markup.
ColourPop's Tye-Dye Collection for Spring/Summer 2020 is very interesting to say the least. While their Miss Bliss and Aura & Out Pressed Pigment Palettes are beautiful to say the least, In A Trance was the one that really caught my attention. The color story is very reminiscent of the Final Fantasy Series, specifically the old school games.
Before we dive right in to the review, here are the colors:
clarity: super shock opal with a gold flip
mind's eye: metallic lavender with a silver flip
daydream bby: matte true lilac with pin points of silver pearl
future self: matte pastel sky blue
all aura again: glitter opal with multidimensional glitter
crown chakra: metallic pinky lilac
transcend dance: matte baby blue
own ur power: matte violet
uplevel: matte dusty lilac
The colors are gorgeous and to die for. However, this palette has a pastel color story, so if pastels are not your thing, this is a hard pass. What I've noticed is that Clarity looks more like a lovely topper shade that can work in place of the glitter shade, All Aura Again. The one shade that I did have issues with was Transcend Dance. It applied really patchy and you had to really work with it to get the opacity you need.
One thing I do have to mention is that the glitter shade, All Aura Again, is a little scratchy since its a loose glitter. In order to get it to work, you have to use glitter glue. Personally, as gorgeous as it is, this not a shade I will use much due to the fact that it is scratchy. I applied it very carefully on my lids to give a magical glam feel to my soft glam Aerith look that I did.
Overall, the swatches that I did with the brushes and fingers are very consistent in how it was applied for my Aerith look.
The blendability of this palette is lovely and I say it is one of ColourPop's more blendable shadows. When I mixed Daydream Bby with Crown Chakra for the lovely transition, it gave me a beautiful lavender as a transition shade which doesn't happen often with ColourPop shadows. The idea that it is based on Tie-Dye makes sense, since when you Tie-Dye clothing, colors tend to blend together to create something beautiful.
I really enjoyed playing with this palette and creating my Aerith look with it. It is definitely something that she would wear and I would definitely wear it again.
Aside from some of the issues that this palette has, it is one of the better and more interesting palettes that ColourPop has come out with.
This palette gets 9 materia out of 10.
